Meet Chris and Dianne

What were some of the main reasons you decided to choose TERRACE for your build?

We love the design; the clever use of space made a TERRACE house spacious and had a great wow factor with the open living kitchen and dining area.

Where are you building, and why did you choose that location?

We are building in The Hales estate in Forrestfield.  We love the quiet semi-rural feel of the area; with great views of the hills. Our block in particular is a corner block, this allowed us space for our two dogs and minimal common walls. We share only one fence line with another TERRACE house, we look straight onto a lovely park and are at the end of a cul-de-sac. There are a number of mature trees on an already established area and a beautifully designed dog park by Satterley, which has added to make this development a very leafy green and calm environment.

How would you describe the style you are going for with your home?

A modern dual floor plan with minimalistic style with wow factor and excellent functionality. We are downsizing without compromising.

What is the favourite part of your floor plan?

By far the ground floor kitchen/dining/living area, we will have more bench and storage in our TERRACE than we had in our large family home.

What inspired you to add the Fonzie to your floor plan?

We have our young adult daughter living with us, so having the Fonzie allows us both to have our privacy and own space whilst having the security of living in the same property. We also love the versatility – this is an excellent multi-purpose entertaining area, workshop, craft room or music room if she decides to move out.

What are some of the “clever” features of your home that you are most looking forward to?

I am really looking forward to the clever use of storage space in the design of the kitchen, laundry and bedrooms. We have made simple changes to the bathrooms, which will give us great function and ease of cleaning.

What room are you most excited about finalising the finishings for at your Prestart?

Most definitely the kitchen, we have done lots of research in colours and finishes and cupboard space and design.

What kind of research have you been doing in preparation for your Prestart?

We have been to display homes, visited show rooms and your amazing new showroom BGC Home. We have started a design board on our iPad, keeping ideas and colour designs. We look at our friends and family homes for things we like in their homes and ask them for the pros and cons and practicalities to see if that will work for us.

How would you describe the process of building with TERRACE so far?

Due to the current economic climate and the introduction of the government subsidies it has been interesting and challenging, but also totally understandable that things take a little longer. In all of this we have had nothing but good to say of our sales rep Baden and our contract administrator Sonia – they have always done their best to answer our questions quickly and fully and give us some great suggestions and tips, giving us confidence going forward that we are building with the right company!

What are your top three tips that you would give other people building a new home?

  1. Work out how you live now and for the next 7 years, focus your needs on how you work with your design. Great parties congregate in the kitchen and living areas so put your wish list in that area.
  2. If you want some changes or extras, especially if in construction and basic design and you can stretch your budget to do them, do them at the build process, as it never happens later!  Often this will add value when it is time to sell – a freestanding bath and rectified floor to ceiling tiles in the bathrooms does it for us.
  3. Look at your electrical plans and put all your power points and lights in places that you know you will use for the function of that room.
